About the United Church of Christ
The United Church of Christ is a denomination of over 5000
congregations. It formed in 1957 when several Protestant
denominations merged. Here is the UCC in
brief:
- Our congregations are diverse with many different
beliefs. They covenant together to do God's work.
- There is no top down authority: each
congregation decides its own organizational structure and
theological stances.
- The UCC is ecumenical. It continually seeks to
partner with other church bodies in the spirit of Jesus prayer in
John 17:21, "that they may all be one".
- The UCC has many firsts, including the first to ordain
an African American Pastor (1785), a woman pastor (1853), an openly
gay person (1972), and the first to affirm same-gender marriage
equality (2005).
